At Bedspace Trust, we believe in the power of storytelling to inspire, connect, and raise awareness. As part of our campaign to highlight the 'Post-18 cliff edge' and the challenges faced by young people transitioning out of care, we’re thrilled to share the incredible journey of Matty—a former Bedspace young person who has turned his experiences into powerful music.

Matty’s time with Bedspace was transformative. With the guidance and unwavering support of Wade and Danielle, Matty found stability, encouragement, and the foundation he needed to start building his future. “Wade and Danielle always had my back,” he shared. “They understood what I was going through and always encouraged me to keep going, even when I didn’t believe in myself. Their support meant everything to me.”

After moving on to Bedspace Trust, Matty continued to thrive under the guidance of Jen. This seamless support network, spanning from Bedspace to Bedspace Trust, has been instrumental in Matty’s journey toward sustained independence and success.

Reflecting on his time in care, Matty shared his positive experience. “I know not everyone’s journey is the same, but for me, being in care wasn’t a bad thing—it was actually a good thing. It gave me structure, opportunities, and people who genuinely cared about me. Bedspace helped me find my way, and I’ll always be grateful for that.”

Matty also spoke passionately about the importance of staying true to oneself, despite the labels society may impose. “I used to think, ‘Oh, I’m just the foster care kid,’ but I’ve realised that label doesn’t define me. My story, my music, and who I am do.” He explained how music became his outlet, a way to confront his past and turn his experiences into art. “It’s like a diary. I write stories about what I’ve been through, turn them into rap, and share them with the world. At first, it was just for me—a way to process things—but now it’s for others too.”

Matty’s music resonates with those who’ve faced similar struggles, receiving messages daily from fans inspired by his lyrics. “I’ve had people tell me my music helped them through hard times—whether it’s growing up in care, dealing with a parent’s addiction, or finding their identity. It motivates me to keep going.”

What makes Matty’s journey even more remarkable is his vision for the future. When asked about his plans, he spoke passionately about giving back to the foster care community. “When I make it big, the first thing I’m going to do is raise money for foster kids. I’ve always said that. It’s my way of showing gratitude and helping others who are in the position I was in.”

Matty’s recent visit to Bedspace’s Liverpool office during National Care Leavers’ Week was a full-circle moment. He performed for young people currently supported by Bedspace and shared his story to inspire and encourage them. “I just want them to know that no matter where you come from or what you’ve been through, you can make something of yourself. Be real with yourself, stay true to who you are, and don’t let anyone define you by your past.”

Matty’s story is a testament to the impact of dedicated support, resilience, and the power of creativity. It’s a reminder that with the right guidance and determination, young people leaving care can achieve incredible things.
